Inspired by Bridges at the Fraser River Discovery Centre
New Westminster, BC - On Saturday November 21, the Fraser River Discovery
Centre is celebrating bridges. Visitors of all ages can learn about the
history of bridges in New Westminster and look at the engineering technology
of a good bridge. Visitors will then be able to try their hand at building a
bridge for prizes.
Living in Metro Vancouver, most of us pass over bridges without much
thought, save a grumble about the traffic that invariably backs up around
the on-ramps. However, bridges are intricate and complicated structures that
make our lives easier. Until 1904, when the first New Westminster bridge was
build, crossing the river in the city was only possible by boat. This first
bridge is still in use today by trains, and crosses the river alongside the
Patullo and Skytrain Bridges.
Bridges have also been sources of entertainment. The first Queensborough
Bridge was a swing bridge and children often dared each other to wait until
the last possible second to jump onto the open swing arm. One unfortunate
boy waited a moment too long. He fell right into the river and had to be
fished out by a passing tug boat.
On Saturday the 21st, come to the Discovery Centre and leave looking at New
Westminster bridges differently!
The Fraser River Discovery Centre is an interpretive centre connecting
