[BCMA] FREE TALK ON THE FUTURE OF MUSEUM COLLECTING AT MUSEUM OF VANCOUVER - WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 25TH!

THREE MUSEUM LEADERS DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF COLLECTING - NOVEMBER 25 AT
MUSEUM OF VANCOUVER. 

 

Local cultural leaders Dr. Anthony Shelton of the Museum of
Anthropology, Dr. Wayne Maddison of the Beaty Biodiversity Museum and
Nancy Noble, CEO of Museum of Vancouver, will present slides of their
most recent acquisitions and share insights on contemporary collecting
practices. 

 

The impetus for this talk is our feature exhibition, Ravishing Beasts,
which runs from October 22, 2009 to February 28, 2010. 

 

This exhibit showcases pieces from the Museum's natural history
collection that have not been on public display for over half a century,
including major examples of taxidermy.  It also asks questions at a
significant moment for museums. We are digitizing our collections and
placing a growing emphasis on multimedia and web-based exhibitions and
programs to better-engage audiences and enrich the visitor experience,
yet what do contemporary collecting strategies look like in this
context? What are the practices we must retain and what are long-held
practices that should be questioned and rethought? What is on the
horizon for collecting institutions like ours?

 

The talk is free and will be followed by a reception and chance to
discuss the issues raised in the presentations. We are offering a
special admission price of $7 for Ravishing Beasts that evening only.
