North Vancouver Museum & Archives presents
Through the Authors' Eyes
_____________________________________________________________________________________
What do a retired banker, an historian and a biologist have in common? North Vancouver Museum & Archives presents a triad of singular authors that breathe new life into fascinating events of an earlier time. See through their eyes the stories and places that give North Vancouver its distinctive appeal. With first-hand accounts, old documents and insatiable curiosity, they uncover the mysteries of North Vancouver's unusual characters, places and events.
Begin on October 29th with historian Warren Sommer, who will tell us the finer points of North Vancouver's movers, shakers, saints and at times, scoundrels. Well known is the city's easy access to downtown Vancouver, multi-use waterfront and outdoor recreation opportunities; it is one of BC's most desirable places to live. But, its through familiar characters like tug boat company owner Cates, land tycoon Mahon, First Nations leader Capilano and others, that Warren sets the stage for a community that lived up to its motto, The Ambitious City, also the title of his book.
Meet the personalities as Warren got to know them through the legacies they left behind. You will discover their ambitions, larger-than-life personas as well as impact on events that shaped both our city and province as it is today.
Next, on November 5th, we zoom in on one epic moment in BC's history. Award winning author and retired banker Eric Jamieson, talks about his book, Tragedy at Second Narrows: the Story of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge. It has been over fifty years since the Second Narrows Bridge collapsed, one of the worst industrial accidents in the province.
Return to the scene of the tragedy as Eric reconstructs the event introducing key politicians, construction bosses, engineers and ironworkers; Relive those terrifying moments when the structure began to crack and drop like the bottom was falling out of the world. In the end, you will be left with a clear picture of precisely how a great disaster took shape and plunged to its inevitable conclusion.
Lastly, from unforgettable personalities and events we end with our latest discovery of small yet no-less-significant places and their all-but-forgotten stories. Join Sharon Proctor on November 12th, in her debut as a published historian for her book, Time Travel in North Vancouver: A Peek into the Past. From a century-old building, to a peculiar stone wall, to a forgotten trail by the river, there are now 90 such gems all over North Vancouver detailed in her book.
You will journey back and forth in time as Sharon pursues North Vancouver's lesser known past. Discover how she happened across these spaces in the first place and gain a new appreciation of this eclectic and vibrant community.
Through the Authors' Eyes is presented Thursdays, October 29th, November 5th and 12th, 2009, 7 pm at the Community History Centre, 3203 Institute Road (near Lynn Valley Centre), North Vancouver.
