Movie Night at the Delta Museum & Archives:
Construction of the George Massey Tunnel 1956 to 1959
Delta, BC On Saturday, May 23, 1959 the George Massey Tunnel opened to
traffic for the first time. The event was marked by music, dancing, horse
races and a monster traffic jam. At 7am the first of 130,000 vehicles drove
through the tunnel for a free weekend before a toll of 10¢ had to be paid on
Monday. Today more then 85,000 vehicles use the tunnel on their daily

Have you ever wondered how the Massey Tunnel was built as you travel through
its 2,063 ft. length? Now you have an opportunity to find out.
Join us on Saturday, November 7 for an after hours viewing of the exhibit
Tunnel Vision 50th Anniversary of the George Massey Tunnel followed by
a screening of George Masseys home video of the tunnels construction from
1956 to 1959.
Through the evening visitors will learn about the years of political
lobbying and the engineering events that resulted in the tunnels
construction and hear interesting and factually information from George
Masseys son Doug.
The evening will begin at 6:00pm at the Delta Museum and Archives historical
