Please join us for the

Dialogue on Northern Digitization

on Saturday, November 7, 2009

at the Fort St. John Public Library/North Peace Cultural Centre

12:30 to 3:30 PM

In December 2008, more than 170 representatives from libraries,
archives, museums, historical societies, and the education and First
Nation communities came together in Vancouver to discuss the future of
digitization at the BC Digitization Symposium. This event engaged
participants as they learned about provincial and national initiatives
supporting the digitization of cultural, heritage, and educational
content, discovered emerging strategies and priorities here in BC, and
discussed how digitization might be better supported and coordinated in
the province.

Two representatives of the North East Library Federation (NELF) attended
the Symposium and recognized the need for sharing the information with
stakeholders from organizations in the area. Therefore NELF is hosting
a "Northern Digitization Dialogue" on November 7 in Ft. St. John. At
the event, two speakers from the BC Digitization Coalition will:

Share the vision of a provincial digitization initiative -- the BC
Digitization Coalition -- which has become the legacy of the Symposium

Summarize the key outcomes and recommendations of the Symposium

Describe the BC History Digitization Program, an initiative by the
Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at UBC which offers grant funding to BC
organizations engaging in digitization projects

Participants will have the chance to discuss their challenges,
experiences, opportunities, and explore how digitization might be better
supported and coordinated in northern BC.

About the facilitators:

Simon Neame is the Assistant Director of the Irving K. Barber Learning
Centre at UBC Vancouver and Chair of the BC Digitization Coalition.

Gordon Coleman is a Project Coordinator at the BC Electronic Library
Network. He coordinates the technology which supports the West Beyond
the West search portal (westbeyondthewest.ca) to BC historical digitized
materials.
