Be inspired by the Fraser River at the 6th annual Artists on the River

New Westminster, BC - To celebrate BC and World Rivers Day and in
partnership with the City of New Westminster and the Arts Council of New
Westminster, the Fraser River Discovery Centre is hosting the 6th annual
Artists on the River on Saturday and Sunday September 26 and 27 from 11 to
3. The two day festival is designed to encourage an appreciation of the
Fraser River through artist presentations, demonstrations, kids' activities
and music.

In 1980 river conservationist and BCIT instructor, Mark Angelo founded BC
Rivers Day. Its success led to the establishment of World Rivers Day in
2005. Now endorsed by the UN, millions of people gather together at hundreds
of events held worldwide on the last weekend of September to celebrate river
systems and promote water stewardship. The 2009 World Rivers Day feature
river is the Fraser River. The Fraser is highly important to the history,
culture, economy and the ecology of the province. It runs 1375km from the
Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean and its rivershed is roughly the size
of California. The basin generates 80% of BC's economy and two out of three
people in BC live in the region.

Residents are invited to participate in Rivers Day at the 2009 Artists on
the River. Shannon King, Education Coordinator says, "The event is really
expanding this year to celebrate both art and environmentalism for Rivers
Day. It will be much larger than in past years and offers many new
activities for families."

On Saturday and Sunday, over 20 visual artists will gather at the Fraser
River Discovery Centre and along the boardwalk at the Quay to share with the
public how the river inspires their work. Visitors are invited to watch art
demonstrations and chat with the artists. Inside the Discovery Centre,
visitors of all ages will be encouraged to get creative at a number of
stations celebrating art and our connection to the Fraser River. Children
can create a river hat, get their hands dirty at the Fraser River Discovery
Centre's pollution model, enjoy puppet shows or paint a fish with Stream of
Dreams to decorate the fence adjacent to the Discovery Centre.

Artists on the River will be held rain or shine. In the event of rain,
artists will be displaying their work inside the Fraser River Discovery
Centre. This World Rivers Day, visitors are invited to come to the boardwalk
and Fraser River Discovery Centre and be inspired by one of the most
important rivers in Canada, the Fraser River.
