Fraser River Discovery Centre School Education Programs receives $10,000
donation
New Westminster, BC - The Fraser River Discovery Centre's (FRDC) Education
Department has been awarded $10,000 from BC Hydro's Community Investment,
Outreach & Education funding program. FRDC's educational goal is to connect
people with the living, working Fraser River by offering interactive and
thought-provoking programming. School Programs elicit passion about the
Fraser River for the future leaders in river stewardship, our children.
FRDC's educational programs are developed to complement public and private
education curriculum for Grades 1 through 7. All school programs are fully
integrated with the BC Ministry of Education curriculum and provide hands on
interactive experiences.
As an example, Shannon King, Education Coordinator, explains, "Shadows of
the Fraser: The Fraser River White Sturgeon is one of our most popular
education programs. Students discover the life cycle, habitat, anatomy and
needs of these elusive animals through sensory exploration including
puppets, real life specimens, and a felt board habitat game. Other school
program focus on trade and technology and solutions to pollution".
"BC Hydro is pleased to fund education programs that provide students with
the knowledge to make informed decisions in shaping a sustainable future."
said Larina Lopez, BC Hydro Community Investment, Outreach and Education
manager. "Understanding the importance of the Fraser River to the province
allows students to continue to take personal action for energy conservation
in BC."
Catherine Ouellet-Martin, FRDC's Executive Director commends BC Hydro for
their commitment to support initiatives that focus on environmental
sustainability, "FRDC's mission is to be recognized as a centre of
excellence for stimulating passion, education and enlightenment about the
Fraser River so it can be sustained for generations to come. FRDC's
education programs provide students with an opportunity to develop a respect
for the river's role in shaping British Columbia's ecological, social and
economic diversity."
Understanding the importance of the Fraser River is even more apparent now
than ever. Each year, the Outdoor Recreation Council solicits and reviews
nominations for BC's Most Endangered Rivers from its member groups, and this
year the Fraser River is in fourth place. For the 17th time in 18 years,
the Fraser River finds its way into the top half of the endangered rivers
list.
Other funders of FRDC's educational programs include BC Gaming Commission,
Vancouver Airport Authority, Port Metro Vancouver, RBC Foundation and The
Norlien Foundation.
