EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
OSOYOOS MUSEUM SOCIETY


The Osoyoos Museum Society has a career opening for a new Executive Director due to the retirement of the incumbent.  Reporting to the Board of Directors of the Osoyoos Museum Society, the Executive Director is responsible for the operation, development and future success of one of the best small-town museums in BC.
  
The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:
* Coordinating the day-to-day operation of the museum and archives including accessioning, preserving and protecting artifacts, maintaining and enriching displays, assisting with access to archival materials and ensuring that the museum continues to attract visitors - both new and returning 
* Developing and delivering outreach programs to schools and the community-at-large
* Playing a lead role in terms of liaison, communications, promotion and public relations with visitors, members of the community and a host of groups and agencies with an interest in the museum including the Osoyoos Indian Band
* Fund-raising and grant writing 
* Supporting the Board of Directors and implementing Board policy

The successful candidate will have:
* A post-secondary educational background which is complementary to the role of Executive Director and Curator of a small-town museum
* Professional museum experience, or a combination of relevant training and work experience in non-profit organizations preferably in a museum, archive, gallery or historical site setting
* A clear understanding of the purposes, functions and challenges associated with the operation of a museum in a small community as well as the importance of capitalizing on cultural tourism opportunities in the years ahead 
* Thorough knowledge of, and  experience in, collections management
* Superior communications and interpersonal skills 
* Well-developed computer skills
* Demonstrable skills in the areas of planning, budgeting, policy development, developing and maintaining a business plan, public relations, grant writing, fundraising, coordinating and supervising both staff and volunteers and working effectively with a Board made up of community members from different walks of life
* Ability to develop a volunteer pool and work effectively with volunteers
* Ability to work flexibly and effectively with minimal supervision

The starting date is preferably October 18, 2010 which will allow for a two-week overlap with the retiring incumbent.
