George needs your help
New Westminster, BC - Meet George. George is a model of a Fraser River White
Sturgeon, an amazing fish that can grow to be over 6 meters long, live over
150 years, and can weigh up to 800 kg. Sturgeons have existed since the time
of the dinosaurs but today their survival is threatened. George inspires
visitors to care about the future of the Fraser River White Sturgeon and
every year his important story is one of many told to hundreds of school
children by a dedicated team of volunteer docents. This September the
Discovery Centre is looking for new volunteers to expand its docent team.
Educating students about the history, environment, culture and industry of
the Fraser River is at the heart of the Fraser River Discovery Centre. By
teaching young people about the incredibly diverse watershed, the Discovery
Centre encourages students to care about the Fraser River and gives them the
tools to protect the basin and its resources.
Shannon King, Education Coordinator is looking forward to expanding the
Docent team as they allow the Discovery Centre to offer more school programs
while keeping group sizes small. "Many of our volunteers say that being a
Docent is a lot of fun because the school children are so excited to be
exploring the Centre. Their enthusiasm is infectious!" Docents work in teams
to present hands-on activities to visiting classes.
King is looking for volunteers who are keen to share their enthusiasm for
the Fraser River. Anyone can be a docent; no special background or
experience is required. Full training is provided. The only qualifications
needed are an interest in working with children, a desire to learn about the
Fraser River, and a weekday morning or afternoon to give to the Centre.
The Discovery Centre will be offering four school programs in the fall on
Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Each program includes a number of
hands-on stations to teach about different aspects of the Fraser River.
"Through mock archaeological excavations, science experiments and games, we
are encouraging children to care about the Fraser River", says King.
King will be holding training sessions throughout September starting with an
orientation for new volunteers on Wednesday September 8th and Friday
September 10 from 10:30 to 12:30. People interested in learning more about
volunteering at the Discovery Centre are encouraged to register for one of
these sessions by September 6th at 604-521-8401 or
info at fraserrivediscovery.org.
