The Summerland Museum is pleased to announce the acquisition of one of British Columbia's most important collections.

A Committee of the Women's Institute provincial association made a large donation to the Museum; twenty-eight bankers' boxes of documents, records, photographs and ephemera of the over four hundred Women's Institute chapters that once existed in BC. The committee of Ruth Fenner (Vancouver Island), Eleanor Walker (Okanagan) and Jean Johnston (Kootenays) authored the 2009 publications to honour of the centennial of the Women's Institute in BC, "100 Years of BC Women's Institutes 1909-2009" and "100 Women of the British Columbia Women's Institute." Their extensive research over the last few years has produced volumes of information about the pioneer women of BC and the vital work they carried out since the early years of the province's development.

Why Summerland? Our community started their Women's Institute in 1909 and this donation honours their many accomplishments since that time. As well the Committee decided that not all information should be housed in the provincial archives, that another central location would make future research more available to more researchers. Archivist Ruth tenVeen is hard at work creating a well organized fonds (no small job!) of the information. The Summerland Museum welcomes anyone looking for information about the Women's Institute and the fonds will be listed on MemoryBC.ca
