Film Screening: Both Sides of the Wire

at the Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia

 

The Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia presents a special
screening of the documentary Both Sides of the Wire on Wednesday,
January 5, 2011 from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm. The Jewish Museum & Archives of
BC is located at 950 W. 41st Avenue, Vancouver, BC. Admission is $10 per
person, $8 per member of the Jewish Historical Society of BC or the
Vancouver Jewish Film Festival. No reservations are required.

Early in the summer of 1940, with the Battle of Britain underway and the
German army preparing for invasion, the British government panicked and
ordered the arrest of all German and Austrian refugees. Thousands of
refugees, most of them Jews, were shipped out of Britain that summer to
be interns in P.O.W. camps in Canada and Australia. The Canadian
government, while refusing entry to Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany,
agreed to accept the prisoners of war as "dangerous enemy aliens."
However when the first of these men arrived at camp "B" in New
Brunswick, the Canadians quickly realized that their prisoners were
civilian refugees-students, professors, businessmen, priest, and
rabbis-and not the Nazis they were expecting.

 

Both Sides Of The Wire explores what it means both physically and
emotionally to be a refugee in this "a century of refugees", and how
these men were able to thrive in a seemingly hostile environment.
