Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia Philosophers' Cafés 

find a new home at the Gaia Bistro

 

The Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia continues its popular Philosophers' Café series in the year 2011 at a new location, the Gaia Bistro <http://www.gaiabistro.ca/> . Located in the heart of Kerrisdale, Vancouver, café participants will now enjoy wholesome and fresh Mediterranean cuisine while engaging in meaningful dialogue on subjects ranging from the ethics of collecting, to Jewish culture around the world, to Biblical translation and Jewish humour.

 

The Philosophers' Café is a series of gatherings featuring high level public conversation. No philosophical training or expertise is required. The Philosopher's Café promotes open, meaningful dialogue on the discussion topic, enabling participants to share their own ideas and to broaden their perspective by considering the views of others. The Philosophers' Cafe program is presented in collaboration with the Department of Continuing Education at Simon Fraser University.

 

New Philosophers' Café location: 

Gaia Bistro (2055 West 41st Avenue, Vancouver). (604) 568-5022

 Come and enjoy some delicious slow-cooked Mediterranean cuisine. Fully licensed.  

Admission: $5 /person. Seating is limited to 20 people, RSVP is required, contact info at jewishmuseum.ca to register.

Topic: The Rise and Fall and Rise of Jewish Life around the world

Guest moderator: Michael Geller, SFU Centre for Sustainable Community Development

 

o   Wednesday, March 16, 2011: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Topic: Lost in translation? What are we missing when we read the Bible in English?

Guest moderator: Rabbi Dr. Robert Daum, Vancouver School of Theology

 

o   Wednesday, April 13, 2011: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Topic: What is Jewish humour?

Guest moderator: Jeffrey Groberman, writer and producer
