JOB SPECIFICS

            Job Title: Registrar
            Location: Burnaby Village Museum, Burnaby British Columbia
            Wage: $23.04
            Start date:  June 1, 2010
            End date:   Aug 31, 2010


            PROJECT OBJECTIVES

            The Registrar will work with museum staff on a variety of textile based projects. The Registrar will document, evaluate for significance and condition, and re-house for storage the Museum's historical costume collection.  Working with the curatorial staff, the Registrar will ensure all documentation is complete for each artifact and make recommendations to include the artifact for digital photography, for preventive conservation treatments or storage improvements.  He or she will make recommendations for future development of the collection

            The Registrar will work with the Designer and Costume Coordinator to learn how textiles are used to support Museum 2010 "Tools of the Trade" exhibit themes. The Registrar will assist these staff members in their creation of historic costumes and display environments by providing accurate    research material and drawing attention to collection strengths and focus.

            Through this project, a student will have an opportunity to acquire hands-on learning about   collections management, including collections research, condition reporting, inventory functions, preventive conservation and exhibit design.


            CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

            The candidate must be highly educated in and thoroughly familiar with costume history and construction, able to identify textile fibres, accurately describe garments and their use. Training though a costume design program is a definite asset. They should have museum experience     either by employment in a curatorial department or training in Museum Studies.  Familiarity with databases, data input and form design is an asset.  The candidate must be able to safely handle     and transport fragile artifacts.  They must be able to work independently after a period of training and supervision, or within a group.  They must be able to communicate the knowledge they have gained in their work with the textile collection in a manner that will facilitate the work of others creating reproduction and museum exhibits.
