Expanded Literary Practices in Vancouver: 1954-1969

January 9 to March 13, 2010 - Simon Fraser University Gallery

In an era when almost everyone is worried about the future, Vancouver’s
cultural amnesia is being stretched to its limits. The exhibition to
show, to give, to make it be there revisits a moment in our recent
history when the notions of hybridity and interdisciplinarity were the
norm. The fifteen years from 1954 to 1969 were special for many reasons,
but they also paved the way for, and catalyzed subsequent cultural
production that uses collage and ‘mixed media’ as its basis. During the
1954 to 1969 period visual artists, musicians, writers, dancers and
filmmakers crossed the boundaries set by their disciplines to engage in
both new forms of composition and new modes of production, especially
the newly-emergent collaborations that blurred the lines of authorship.
What happened naturally between 1954 and 1969 is now being repeated,
perhaps also ‘naturally’, but with differences that do not, however,
sever the ties to the earlier modes of practice.

While some of this information will be new to BC art history, it is not
news to the visual artists, musicians, writers, dancers and filmmakers
who have long known that Vancouver’s golden age has been largely
ignored, until now. That we are in the midst of a yet another
technological shift, one that has altered our conception of the letter,
the photograph and most recently, the book, makes this exhibition not
only relevant but necessary to our understanding of the present.
