Douglas & McIntyre Publishes the Best of MOA's Global Collection,
Commemorating the "New" Museum of Anthropology
On January 23, 2010, the internationally acclaimed UBC Museum of
Anthropology will celebrate the completion of its $55.5 million renewal
project with the launch of MOAs unique Multiversity Galleries, a new 5,800
sq ft temporary exhibition hall The Audain Gallery and the Reciprocal
Research Network, the worlds first digital network linking Northwest Coast
collections worldwide.
To mark this exciting occasion, the Museum and Douglas & McIntyre are proud
to release a new publication highlighting MOAs international collections
and the magnificent Arthur Erickson-designed building in which they are
housed.
Edited by Dr. Carol E. Mayer and Dr. Anthony A. Shelton, this stunning
volume celebrates MOA's rich past and promising future. Lavishly
illustrated, it highlights 150 works from the Museum's vast collections,
which include historic and contemporary carvings, ceramics, sculptures,
paintings and textiles from Asia, the South Pacific, North, South, and
Central America, Africa, Australia, and Europe, as well as magnificent totem
poles, sculptures, carved boxes, feast dishes, baskets, and intricate items
made of gold, silver, and argillite from the northwest coast of B.C. Short
histories of each collection and extended captions offer fascinating
details.
Dr. Carol E. Mayer is the head of the curatorial department at the Museum of
Anthropology and an associate to UBCs Department of Anthropology.
Internationally known for her work as a museum curator, she has published
widely on museum-related topics, curated more than 40 exhibitions, and
received numerous international awards and fellowships.
Dr. Anthony A. Shelton, a leading scholar in museology, cultural criticism,
and the anthropology of art and aesthetics, is director of the Museum of
Anthropology. He has taught at several European universities, and curated
exhibitions for the British Museum, Brightons Royal Pavilion, and Londons
Horniman Museum.
