Public Lecture: Photography and Weaving in Salishan New Westminster

New Westminster Museum and Archives 302 Royal Avenue

7pm January 21st, 2010

By donation

Supporting the exhibit, "Laid Over to Cover: Photography and Weaving of
the Salishan Landscape", research curators David Bellman and Meirion
Evans will discuss their exhibit's conceptual orientation. Additionally
they will address the cross-cultural (aboriginal/colonial) development
of the City of New Westminster from 19th century interactions of native
and non-native cultures to present day town planning proposals for
ecological renewal along the Fraser River (in the region of a village
one permanently occupied by indigenous mainland Halkomelem-speaking
people). Bellman and Evans will provide a new, expanded context for the
traditional Salish artifacts which are now preserved in the collection
of the New Westminster Museum and Archives. The exhibition is on
display at North Vancouver's Presentation House Gallery from January
16th through March 14th 2010.
