24 Hour International Ham Radio Marathon
- Saturday June 26, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Okanagan Heritage Museum

Amateur radio operators are participating in a 24 hour radio marathon starting this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and you can help them reach first place in the marathon competition!

This is an international marathon, with ham operators from around the world taking part. In Kelowna, members of the Orchard City Amateur Radio Club will man the radio at the Okanagan Heritage Museum for 24 hours, trying to make contact with as many radio operators as they can. In previous years, the Radio Club has placed third in the world in the competition. With lots of public support, they hope to place first this weekend.

In addition to the number of radio contacts made, there are several other ways that a team can earn points, including: points for dignitaries who visit; points for promotion that goes out; points for the number of people who visit; and points for non-hams who go on-air.

"Non-hams usually aren't allowed to transit on ham radios because they don't have the certification," explains Marilyn Wilson, member of the Orchard City Amateur Radio Club. "Events like this marathon are one of the only chances the general public gets to talk on a ham radio."

So come on down to the Museum this Saturday, help your local amateur radio club compete in the marathon, and try your hand at a ham radio.

The public portion of this event takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on June 26. The Museum will be closed to the public for the remainder of the marathon. Admission by donation.

The Okanagan Heritage Museum is located at 470 Queensway Avenue, at the corner of Queensway and Ellis. For more information call 250-763-2417 or visit www.KelownaMuseums.ca<http://www.kelownamuseums.ca/>.
