Art and history collide this July

For the first time, the Community of Creston Arts Council and the Creston
Museum have teamed up to put on an art-meets-history event for the whole
community.

First up is the Creston Museum's Found Art Challenge. The Creston Museum
has removed numerous objects from its collections, objects which are in too
poor condition to have a historic or display value. These objects -
everything from feathers to flat irons - are being offered to local and
regional artists to create works of art. The "challenge" is that the artists
will not know what objects they have to work with until the day of the
event!

One thing that's certain, is that there will be a variety of artists working
in different mediums, so the end results are going to be creative and
innovative. The whole process is open to the public, and everyone is
welcome to watch artists as they manipulate their found objects into
wonderful pieces of art. Most of the artists would love to share some of
what they are doing with you as you pass by.

The Challenge begins at 10:00 AM on Friday, July 9. The artists will be
given a box of artifacts and it will be up to them to use all the items in
at least one work of art. They will work throughout the day until 5:00 pm.
On the morning of Saturday July 10, the artists will have a final four hours
till to put the finishing touches on their work. At 1:00, the finished
pieces will be on display in a one-of-a-kind afternoon art show. Visitors
will be able to vote for their favourite piece to win the Viewers' Choice
award, and jurors will be circulating to award other prizes.

The Arts Council's "Salad Days" gets underway on Saturday afternoon. This
is a chance to return to the idyllic days of the 1950s, while enjoying live
performances of musicians, artists, and actors. The barbecue will be fired
up at 3:00, serving the classic 1950s picnic meals of hamburgers and hot
dogs, along with salads and appetizers. First on the "Salad Days" agenda is
an art auction, starting at 4:00, featuring the works of art created in the
Found Art Challenge. Don't miss this - these will be one-of-a-kind pieces
and there is only one opportunity to get one for yourself!

"Salad Days" continues well into the evening with the barbecue and
performances, as well as 1950s-style games (anyone for a hula-hoop contest?)
and even a movie from the era. Watch for updated schedules of events and
activities.

It all takes place July 9 and 10 at the Creston Museum, located just north
of and across the highway from the Creston Valley Mall. Bring your lawn
chair and settle in for a couple of days, and an evening, of art and
history.

Admission to the Found Art Challenge, either day, is $2 per person (and
includes a tour of the Museum, if you want); there will be a charge for the
barbecue; and "Salad Days" from 3:00 on Saturday is free to everyone!
