The Revelstoke Railway Museum is recognized as one of the best small railway museums in Canada, able to attract over 20,000 visitors annually, by presenting excellent exhibitions on the impact and challenges of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the mountains of British Columbia. The museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history, heritage, and significance of the Canadian Pacific Railway within the region, for the education, enlightenment, and inspiration of present and future generations. In addition to the museum facilities located in downtown Revelstoke, the Society also operates a gift store and interpretive centre at Craigellachie, the site where the Last Spike was driven on November 7, 1885.
Position Description
Under the direction of the Gift Shop Manager, you will provide friendly and responsive visitor services in both the museum and the gift shop areas. You will be expected to work independently and with other staff members. You will be responsible for inventory counts and opening and closing procedures. You will assist with the day-to-day operation of Visitor Services, including front desk admissions and museum site orientation. You ensure the integrity of the admissions desk and store areas – that they are clean and organized and that first impression visitor experiences are consistent with Revelstoke Railway Museum expectations. You assist with telephone reception by re-directing calls or taking messages. You answer basic visitor questions about museum events and community activities. Position offers 40 hours per week for 16 weeks from May 10th to August 27th, 2010.
Key Responsibilities
- Enhance our customer experience by being helpful, cheerful and attentive to their needs both in the museum and the gift store.
- Assist customers with product selection by applying strong product knowledge and providing product demonstrations to customers.
- Assist museum staff with shelving, displaying, promotions, visitor orientation, special events and other related duties.
- Process sales and operate cash register and POS systems accurately and efficiently.
- Complete end of day reconciliation.
- Assist with responding to general inquiries and provide additional administrative support to research facility.
Skills / Abilities
- Minimum Grade 11 education
- Self motivated, organized and experienced in meeting and exceeding our customer needs and expectations in the customer service and hospitality industry.
- Excellent communications skills in the English language.
- Outgoing personality and enjoys dealing directly with the public and as part of a team.
- Flexible and works well under pressure.
- Must be available to work some evenings, weekends and public and statutory holidays.
Compensation: $12.00 per hour. Transportation to Craigellachie provided as needed.
