You are invited to the exhibit opening for The Ripple Effect

New Westminster, BC - On Saturday March 27, the Fraser River Discovery will
celebrate the opening of its newest exhibit, The Ripple Effect. Through an
in-depth look at Fin Donnelly's 1995 and 2000 swims of the Fraser River,
this interactive exhibit celebrates the difference individuals can make to
the health of the rivershed.

In 1995, when swimmer Fin Donnelly began planning a one day swim from
Coquitlam to the mouth of the river, he had no idea how big the project
would become. The one day swim soon turned into a marathon swim of the
entire river, followed up with another swim five years later and to the
establishment of the Rivershed Society of BC. Fifteen years later, The
Ripple Effect takes an in-depth look at the swims, the current health of the
basin and encourages visitors to examine how their own actions positively or
negatively affect the health of the rivershed.

The Ripple Effect aims to focus on the positive without ignoring the
problems. Kathleen Bertrand, Exhibit Coordinator, explains, "Often we can
feel overwhelmed with all the negative news and the enormity of the
problems. But The Ripple Effect is really about celebrating what individuals
can do, and most importantly, what people are doing, to improve their
communities." Donnelly used his talent and passion for swimming to bring
awareness to the rivershed. Bertrand says the impacts of his first swim are
still rippling out today. "We want our visitors to leave the exhibit
inspired to use their talents in new ways to make a positive difference."

Visitors of all ages are invited to attend the opening of The Ripple Effect.
Following greetings from the Mayor of New Westminster and local MLA and MP,
Fin Donnelly will be speaking about his swims, and Mark Anglo, Rudy North
Chair in River Ecology for the Rivers Institute at BCIT and founder of
Rivers Day, will share his story. A series of children's activities have
been planned and light refreshments will be served. The Discovery Centre
will have recyclable drinking cups at the event, but encourages visitors to
bring their own reusable mug to reduce waste.

Ceremonies for The Ripple Effect exhibit opening will begin Saturday March
27 at 1:30pm. The exhibit will be on display at the Fraser River Discovery
Centre until March 27, 2011. The Ripple Effect is sponsored by the Rivers
Institute at BCIT and the City of New Westminster. BC Hydro For Generations
will be providing environmentally themed children's activities during the
opening.

The Fraser River Discovery Centre is an interpretive centre connecting
communities in discovery and celebration of the living, working Fraser
