ART LOVERS HELP KEEP BC'S MARITIME HERITAGE VITAL

VICTORIA, March 17, 2010 - If you were in Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Games and strolling along the harbour waterfront, you might have caught sight of what appeared to be a ghost from the past. The magnificent Russian tall ship, the Krusenstern, is one the last examples of the commercial windjammers that once roamed the world's oceans. Originally named the Padua, this giant four-masted barque was built in 1926 for the German Flying P-Line shipping company. Although wind driven ships were very outdated by then, the Padua continued to haul cargo until transferred to Russia after the end of World War II.
Her sister ship, the Pamir, was a familiar sight to British Columbians as she carried lumber from BC's coast well into the 1940s.

Besides glimpsing these occasional visits from tall ships, you can learn more about the age when wind drove the world instead of oil by visiting the Maritime Museum of British Columbia. And if you visit during the month of March to catch our Art Month celebrations, you will have a unique opportunity to take home an original painting from the Roberts collection and know that your purchase goes to keeping the heritage of our maritime past alive at the MMBC.

Local collectors Ralph and Angie Roberts recently donated more than 70 original artworks to the MMBC for the express purpose of selling to raise funds. Art Month kicked off with a reception and preview sale for MMBC members and friends last Sunday. The event raised more than $25,000 for the museum, leaving fewer than 50 great pieces of original artwork left for sale.

The museum is inviting local businesses and community groups to lunch on Friday March 19. They will get a personal tour of the collection and have the opportunity to support the Museum by purchasing a piece of this collection which was so generously donated by the Roberts family.

Members of the public are invited to view and purchase items from the Roberts Collection until March 27. For more information about the Roberts Collection Art Sale, visit the MMBC website at www.mmbc.bc.ca<http://www.mmbc.bc.ca>.
