Family Day/Ga-ga Tournament at the Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia

The Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia welcomes families for a free fun-filled afternoon in celebration of the exhibition Home Away from Home <http://www.jewishmuseum.ca/campsexhibit> : Building Identity and Community at Jewish Summer Camps on Sunday, June 27, 2010 from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Located on the third floor of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (950 W. 41st Avenue, Vancouver, BC). Families can create colorful camp-themed crests, sing along to camp songs and go on gallery hunts to discover the hidden treasures within the museum. Additionally, visitors are invited to participate in a Gaga tournament (and compete for prizes) in the Jewish Community Centre David Sears Gymnasium, located on the ground floor of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver. Activities in the Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia begin at 1:00pm, while the Ga-ga tournament begins at 1:30pm.

Ga-ga or GaGa is a form of dodgeball that is thought to have originated in Israel. Along with the racquet sport of Matkot, ga-ga is one of the most popular Israeli folk sports. "Ga" (גע) means "hit" in Hebrew. The game Gaga was imported to Jewish camps in English speaking countries by Israeli visitors in the early 1960s and rose to popularity in the 1970s.

The game of Ga-ga is typically played in an octagonal enclosure, but any other completely enclosed space also works. The point of the game is to eliminate other players by hitting a ball with an open hand or fist into the region at or below his/her knees. That player is subsequently “out” and must leave the Ga-ga playing area, or “pit”. The winner is the last one standing, and is rewarded with bountiful bragging rights.

Anyone interested in participating in the Gaga tournament* is encouraged to register by calling (604)257-5199 or email info at jewishmuseum.ca.

*recommended for ages 5 and up
