Philosophers' Café with the Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia
Ethics Across Cultures and the Golden Rule, Is this really the right stuff?
Presented by Dr. Rick Berwick
Vancouver, BC - The Jewish Museum & Archives of British Columbia presents a Philosophers' Café discussion of "Ethics Across Cultures and the Golden Rule, Is this really the right stuff?" on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. The café will take place in the Snider Adult Lounge, located on the first floor of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver.
If we live in a global village, what are the rules that guide us, or ought to guide us, and where do they come from? When cultures clash what strategy informs us about what's golden, when, and for whom? The cafe will discuss some of these ethical challenges and how to come to terms with them.
Philosophers' Café is a series of gatherings featuring high level public conversation. No philosophical training or expertise is required. The Philosopher's Café promotes open, meaningful dialogue on the discussion topic, enabling participants to share their own ideas and to broaden their perspective by considering the views of others.
About the moderator:
Dr. Richard Berwick (EdD) has been teaching English as a foreign language in British Columbia and Japan since 1980. His research interests include how multicultural/multilingual groups acquire perceptions of others through discourse and the role of affect and reactivity in acculturation of international student sojourners.
Admission: $5 per person, refreshments by donation
The Philosophers' Café series is presented in collaboration with Simon Fraser University Department of Continuing Studies.
