Forrest Marine Ltd. is the 21st inductee into the Fraser River Hall of Fame
New Westminster - Each year, the Fraser River Discovery Centre Society
recognizes significant achievements and contributions made by a family,
individual, business, corporation or organization to the Fraser River with
an induction into the Fraser River Hall of Fame. This year, the Society is
proud to induct Forrest Marine Ltd. at the 21st Annual Hall of Fame Gala
Dinner, held at the Fraser River Discovery Centre on Thursday October 21,
2010.
Mike and Ray Forrest, current owners of Forrest Marine Ltd., are the third
generation of the Forrest family to live and work on the Fraser River. In
1916 Mike and Ray's grandparents, Samuel and Hilda Forrest, towed their
float house to Port Coquitlam, where Samuel worked in the shipyards. When
Samuel died in 1935, their children, Harvie and Eve, inherited two boats and
began working on the river. In 1944, Harvie married Nel and they had three
children, Ray, Mike and Joyce. Mike and Ray have worked side by side since
they were old enough to help their father and continue today with their
wives Karen and Jackie. Over the years, the Forrest family businesses have
included a saw mill, log sorting operations, tug business, fishing
operations and water taxi. Today, Forrest Marine, Ltd. is located on the
family homestead at the foot of Pitt River Road in Port Coquitlam. The
business prides itself on providing a wide variety of marine services and
exceptional customer service. Mike and Ray can also pride themselves on
continuing a strong family tradition of community involvement and river
stewardship.
The annual nomination process invites submissions which are reviewed by the
FRDC Gala Committee for recommendation to the FRDC Board for final approval.
"The submission for Forrest Marine Ltd.'s was one of the strongest we've
seen" says Fraser River Discovery Centre Executive Director, Catherine
Ouellet-Martin. "The company was nominated by the City of Port Coquitlam and
received broad support from industry and political leaders, businesses and
organizations along the river." Robin Silvester, President and CEO of Port
Metro Vancouver writes, "The Forrest Family is truly reflective of that very
rare multi-generational homesteading spirit that helped build this country
and of people who dedicate themselves to community service and putting
others first in everything they do."
On October 21, the Fraser River Discovery Centre Society invites you to
spend and enjoyable evening by the river celebrating the Forrest name and
the people along the living, working Fraser River. The Gala Dinner will be
held in the Discovery Centre at 788 Quayside Drive, New Westminster. Guests
will enjoy a champagne reception in the Lower Fraser Gallery and The Ripple
Effect and Brewer's Gold exhibits before being treated to a fine four-course
dinner served in the Upper Fraser Gallery.
This high profile industry and community event is also a major fundraiser
for the Discovery Centre. Tickets are $150 each or $1400 for a table of ten.
Over half of the tickets have already been sold and organizers expect the
evening to be a sell out. If you are interested in attending, tickets can be
purchased by phone 604-521-8401 or by email info at fraserriverdiscovery.org.
The evening is sponsored at the Platinum level by Pacific Custom Log
Sorting, Quantum Towing and Fraser River Pile and Dredge; at the Gold level
by Bull, Housser & Tupper LLP; at the Silver level by Executive Plaza Hotel;
and at the Bronze level by Allard Sand & Gravel and McQuarrie Hunter LLP.
The Fraser River Discovery Centre Society operates the Fraser River
Discovery Centre. Through interactive exhibits and engaging programming, the
non-profit society connects communities in discovery and celebration of the
living, working Fraser River. The Discovery Centre is open Wednesday to
Sunday 10am to 4pm. Admission is by donation for the exhibit galleries.
