Ernst van de Wetering received his studio art training at the Royal
Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. In 1968, while studying Art History
at the University of Amsterdam, he became an assistant at the
Rembrandt Research Project (RRP), and in 1992 he succeeded Josua Bruyn
as its chairman.

Van de Wetering also worked for the Central Research Laboratory for
Objects of Art and Science in Amsterdam from 1969-1987
<callto:+1969-1987>, and from 1987-2001 <callto:+1987-2001>was a
professor of Art History at the University of Amsterdam. More recently
he was Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford University.

The Rembrandt Research Project has published five volumes of /A Corpus
of Rembrandt Paintings/. Ernst van de Wetering has published /Rembrandt,
The Painter at Work/(1997, University of California Press) and a new
book titled Rembrandt’s Mind will appear in 2011.

His talk at SFU will focus on the mystery of Rembrandt’s self-portraits
- the RRP has assessed their authenticity via the use of
X-Radiography, often yielding surprising results.
