>From Across the Oceans: Diversity in Local Art
Until January 9, 2011
The Langley Centennial Museum’s newest exhibit, From Across the Oceans: Diversity in Local Art features the work of several Lower Mainland artists who have chosen to live in Canada but bring the artistic traditions of their homelands to their work. Not only is the art diverse, including oil paints, water colours and sculptures, but the artists’ backgrounds and homelands are diverse, too, and range from Taiwan to Estonia.
While some are newer artists, others have been creating art for many years, and all have received many awards and recognition.
“The calibre of artist represented here is very high,” said Inta Schorcht, the groups organizer. “It’s been a great experience for the artists to work with the museum, but to also work with each other. Many of them did not know each other before we started organizing this exhibit.”
“It’s wonderful to be able to showcase these new and experienced artists, getting this exposure together here for the first time,” added museum curator Kobi Howard.
The artists include Jong-Jin Lee, Chih-Hsiung (Jackson) Chien, Elena Sambuev, Iris Chen, Lily Ao, Valéri Sokolovski, En-Wei (Michael) Jao, Kosheng Ko, Shu-Chen Huang, Juma Wu, Baljit Kuar, Seonok Lee, Sandra Lin, and Jarnail Singh.
Working with an arts group was a new experience for Stephanie Reczka, the museum’s summer curatorial assistant. “For me, it’s been a fabulous opportunity to work through an exhibit process from start to finish, and to be involved in everything from choosing a title, proof reading, and even painting.”
The exhibit runs from September 7 to January 9, but is closed during the museum’s holiday closure from December 24 – January 2.
