Cedar and Bamboo

April 11th, 2011

The Maritime Museum of BC is proud to present a public screening of the acclaimed Cedar and Bamboo on Saturday, April 23rd from 1-3pm. Directed by Diana Leung and Kamala Todd and produced by Jennifer Lau and Karin Lee, this 20 minute documentary focuses on the relationships built between early Chinese immigrants and indigenous people on Canada's West Coast.

Discover the extraordinary recount of Lil'wat elder Judy Joe as she tells her story of being taken from Vancouver, at the age of five, to live in her father's village in China. Raised by her stepfamily she was treated as an outsider from the onset and fought her way back to her Canadian home. Listen as Musqueam elder, Howard Grant reflects on both his Chinese and Musqueam experiences with both cultures and how they shaped him into the man he is today.

The screening is free and open to the public. Following the screening will be a Question and Answer period with those who were instrumental in the making of the film. The screening will take place in the Museum's beautifully restored 19th century Courtroom on the third floor. Take a ride on our fascinating elevator, the oldest operational open-cage elevator in North America! Admission to the Museum is required to explore the rest of the building.
