Hi Sheila,
Steveston Museum has only one full-time staff member (me) and one of my
jobs is to deliver programs for elementary schools.
At the moment we offer three programs:
1. Guided 60 minute heritage walking tour of Steveston Village;
2. "Urban Packers" self-guided or guided thematic walking tour of the
town which lasts a few hours; and
3. A 90 minute in-class heritage presentation.
With the changes in BC's vehickle child restraint laws, many schools in
the local area have found it difficult to get enough parent drivers with
adequate child seats for field trips to the museum.
As a result I've found my in-class presentation bookings to have
dramatically increased compared with last year.
The classroom, with help from the teacher, takes about 15-20 minutes to
set up.
The 90 minute program is adaptable to fit many themes studied throughout
the elementary social studies curriculum.
It consists of:
1. Slide show of archival images with Q&A throughout presentation - 40
minutes
2. Demonstration of household objects and games pioneer children would
have encountered - 10 minutes
3. 3 activity stations: interacting and exploring the above
objects/games, paper doll activity and Maclean's Method of Handwriting
sheet using straight pens dipped in ink. I explain each station's
activity and history behind the activity and students rotate between the
stations for about 10 minutes each.
The feedback I've received about the program has been extremely
positive.
Like you, I hope to train volunteers in the future to be able to assist
me with these programs.
Hope you find this helpful.
Regards,
Gabrielle.

Subject: [BCMA] Education programs
The Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin is looking for ways to improve our
education programs in the community. I would like to know what other
museums that are similar in size are doing. We do not have a
professional curator and, except for one paid staff, depend on
volunteers to assist with tours.
Any ideas you can share would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sheila Wyse
