MEDIA RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Special events planned to highlight exhibition of public art
Please Touch the Art: Art in the Public Space
On view through September 4, 2011
August 5, 2011 - The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to announce two
special events to highlight our current exhibition of the City of
Kelowna's public art collection. On Thursday, August 11, 2011, the
Gallery invites members of the public to participate in these events to
help them gain a deeper understanding of the importance of public art in
a community, along with offering first-hand access to artists and
members of the Public Art Committee.
On August 11, 2011 from 12 to 1 pm, visitors can enjoy an Artist's Talk
& Brown Bag Lunch, featuring internationally recognized sculptor, Brower
Hatcher. Hatcher is the creator of the much-loved Bear sculpture in
Stuart Park. Visitors are invited to bring their lunches to the Gallery,
and will be able to view images of Hatcher's past works while he
discusses his unique artistic practice, which combines
computer-generated imagery with sculpture.
On the evening of August 11, 2011 from 7 to 9 pm, guests can take part
in a stimulating, provocative, and informative panel discussion about
public art and the role it plays in creating a vibrant community. The
panel will include artists Brower Hatcher, Jock Hildebrandt, and Lee
Claremont, as well as Public Art Committee Chair, Amanda Parks, and City
of Kelowna Cultural Services Manager, Sandra Kochan. The panel will be
moderated by Carl Hodge, Professor of Political Science at UBCO.
Please Touch the Art: Art in the Public Space is more of an informative
installation than a traditional art exhibition, and features interactive
elements that showcase the public art collection, describe how the
acquisition process works, and stimulate discussion with visitors on the
impact of public art. The exhibition prominently features Brower
Hatcher's Bear; it also showcases works by local artist Crystal
Przybille, such as her intricate tree grates that adorn the city's tree
wells, as well as a maquette (that is, a scale model) of her Father
Pandosy sculpture, currently being completed. In addition, Please Touch
the Art outlines how the Public Art Committee chooses and acquires
public art, and provides an opportunity for public input about the
collection.
Please Touch the Art: Art in the Public Space is on view at the Kelowna
Art Gallery now through September 4, 2011. For complete details about
all of the activities and events is planned to complement the
exhibition, please visit the Kelowna Art Gallery website at
