Emily Carr's illustrated journal - Sister and I from Victoria to London

Victoria, BC - Emily Carr's illustrated notebook, penned and painted on a two-month journey from Victoria to London with her sister Alice, has recently been published by the Royal BC Museum.

Carr's 92-page "funny book" Sister and I from Victoria to London was one of the gems found in a trunk that came to the BC Archives in the 1980s. Emily and Alice Carr, aged 38 and 40, crossed Canada by train, took a steamer from Quebec City to Liverpool, then finished their trip by rail to London. Emily's account begins in Victoria, BC, July 11, 1910: With red eyes and a body guard of sniffing "faithfuls" attending us, we start on our long trip abroad . . . . A tear or two and a sniff or so, the whistle blows and off we go.

This tale has now been reproduced in its entirety, directly from the original handwritten journal. Each diary page is opposite a colourful - and characterful - watercolour illustration by Carr. A glossary explains misspellings (some intentional), words of her own invention, and place names that may not be widely recognized.

A richly informative 10-page foreword and images selected by Royal BC Museum archivist and historian Kathryn Bridge introduces readers to Carr, its author and artist. Kathryn says : "Emily chronicles not the scenery of Canada as it whizzes by, but the theft of a bag of peaches as they slept, antics in sleeping berths and the wonders that unfolded in towns and cities where they broke their journey."

Though the journal ends at London, the sisters were both heading to France. Alice went for a vacation but Emily was following her dream. As she reminisced later, "Everyone said Paris was the top of art and I wanted to get the best teaching I knew."
