Kelowna Museums is Celebrating 75 Years in Our Community
Birthday Event Announcement - A Fine Vintage:  Celebrating 75 Years of the Kelowna Museums

We're turning 75!

The Kelowna Museums proudly announces that it has been serving the Okanagan for 75 years.  To celebrate, we are hosting the fundraising event of the season!  Please join us on Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 for- A Fine Vintage: Celebrating 75 Years of the Kelowna Museums.

This gala event will feature a fantastic fashion show, highlighting "fashion through the years", sponsored by Tweaked & Yummy Vintage Apparel, and Frock Clothing Co., and styling and models from Modsalon.   Live entertainment from great local musicians, and Let's Dance Kelowna will show guests how to jive, quickstep, and do the Charleston.

Photography West will also be in attendance, allowing guests to take their best "vintage image", complete with props, costumes, and backdrops.

Throughout the evening, guests will enjoy never-seen-before artefacts, visit the old-time candy buffet, bid on incredible silent auction items, try their hand at 50/50 draws, and sample great wines and amazing cheeses.  Vintage inspired desserts will be served, along with designer birthday cake.

Where:  Laurel Packinghouse (1304 Ellis Street at Cawston Avenue)

When:  7-10 pm, doors opening at 6:30 pm

Cost:  $50 per person (all inclusive), tax receipt available upon request

"We are pleased to be part of the community of Kelowna for the last 75 years, and look forward to the next 75!", says Tracy Satin, Associate Director for the Kelowna Museums and Project Lead for the gala event.  "We are celebrating not only our history, but everyone in our community's as well".



The Kelowna Museums have watched and documented Kelowna grow from a small community in 1936 (population ~4,600) to the great city it is now in 2011 (population ~100,000)!



Did you know?

*         The Kelowna Museums is made up of 5 distinct and amazing museums.   These 5 museums hold the history of your community and its artefacts hold your unwritten histories!

-    The Okanagan Heritage Museum focuses on our social, natural, and scientific histories, and highlights our worldwide connections.  Here you can also experience a real Kekuli (pithouse), a replica of John McDougal's 1860 trading post.

-    The Okanagan Military Museum honours those of us who have fought for oppressed nations and the freedom of all Canadians.  Come out and see one of Canada's best firearm collections, and Canada's most decorated war heroes' medal collection, which includes the Victoria Cross.

-    The BC Orchard Industry Museum tells the stories of our agricultural histories and is located in Canada's largest and oldest standing packinghouse.

-    The BC Wine Museum celebrates the rich history of wine and wine making with amazing viticulture displays.

-    The Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame Museum, the newest museum, highlights how Okanagan athletes have taken the world by storm.

*         The Kelowna Museums provides heritage services.  By visiting the Kelowna Public Archives, the Okanagan Military Archives, the Vince Bezeau Military Reference Library, or the Okanagan Heritage Library, you can discover interesting facts about your house, your family history, or you might even find yourself in some of the books and files!

*         The Kelowna Museums also runs and operates the Laurel Packinghouse, where it hosts hundreds of weddings, corporate events, and private functions year-round.  This building just underwent extensive renovations in 2010, and is now up and running and looking beautiful!

*         The BC Wine Museum also houses one of Kelowna's most popular VQA Wine Stores.  As one of the only not-for-profit liquor establishments, you can count on a wide selection of winery-priced wines!  All proceeds go to support public programming and to support our local agricultural industries.
