Media Release
February 18, 2011
This month marks the beginning of round four for the Nanaimo Sports Hall
of Fame.
Now in its fourth year, the Sports Hall of Fame selection panel is once
again putting out a call to the community for nominations of those
people who live, or are from the Nanaimo area, and have made significant
contributions to sport in the city and elsewhere.
The initiative to immortalize the legacies from Nanaimo's sports
community was launched in 2008 at the newly constructed Nanaimo Museum
downtown and recognizes achievement in five categories - Athlete,
Builder, Media, Pioneer, and Team.
Anyone, except Sports Hall of Fame committee and selection panel members
and museum board members, can submit a nomination for consideration. The
selection panel will consider nominations from the current year as well
as nominations from two induction years prior.
``If you're thinking of nominating someone for the Sports Hall of Fame,
but feel they may have already been nominated, we would ask that you
call us here at the museum to find out for certain,`` says Debbie
Trueman, general manager of the museum.
In order to help the selection panel better understand the career of the
individual or team being nominated, they are asking for as much
information as possible about the nominee's sports background, and that
any pertinent sources are attached to the nomination form.
Criteria and nomination forms are available at the front desk of the
museum, which is located in the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, or
online at www.nanaimomuseum.ca. Nominations will be accepted until April
15, 2011 and completed application forms can be posted to Nanaimo
Museum, 100 Museum Way, Nanaimo BC, V9R 5J8, or sent by email to
Debbie at nanaimomuseum.ca <mailto:Debbie at nanaimomuseum.ca> .
The Sports Hall of Fame exhibit is located in the lobby and includes
plaques, images and sports paraphernalia spanning decades, and is now a
focal point on Vancouver Island for all those who love sports.
