Dear Media Partners,

Attached you will find the media package for our most recent exhibition, Please Touch the Art: Art in the Public Space. The media release is below - however, a detailed package including backgrounder, exhibition details, and activities & events list is attached. This exhibition carries subject matter that is frequently the topic of discussion in your circles; public money being spent to procure art is a hot-button issue at City Hall. This exhibition serves to educate the public on the importance of art in our community - as well as inviting discussion from the public on this topic.

Your assistance with promoting this exhibition and the associated events would be most appreciated.

Please note: I have a full slate of interview subjects, including members of the Public Art Committee, Kelowna Art Gallery staff, and artists (such as Brower Hatcher, creator of Bear, installed in Stuart Park) available.

MEDIA ONLY Walking Tours - Monday July 25, 2011

Available at 1030 am and 230 pm, departing from the Gallery

Kelowna Art Gallery celebrates the unveiling of public art exhibition

Please Touch the Art: Art in the Public Space

On view through September 4, 2011

July 19, 2011 - The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to have collaborated with the City of Kelowna's Public Art Committee on a new exhibition aimed at raising awareness about the diversity, scope, and importance of public art in our community. Please Touch the Art: Art in the Public Space is now officially open to the public, and is on view through September 4, 2011. The exhibition highlights works from the City of Kelowna's public art collection, and includes an in-depth illustration of the artistic process and inspiration behind Brower Hatcher's sculpture Bear, which was created for Stuart Park.

Please Touch the Art: Art in the Public Space is more of an informative installation than a traditional art exhibition, featuring interesting and interactive elements that showcase the public art collection, describe how the acquisition process works, and stimulate discussion with visitors on the impact of public art.

In addition to Hatcher's Bear, the exhibition also showcases works by local artist Crystal Przybille, such as her intricate tree grates that adorn the city's tree wells, as well as a maquette (that is, a scale model) of her Father Pandosy sculpture, currently being completed. Please Touch the Art also outlines how the Public Art Committee chooses and acquires public art, and provides an opportunity for public input to the collection.

An open house to celebrate the exhibition will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at the Kelowna Art Gallery, from 1-3 pm. Members of the Public Art Committee and Kelowna Art Gallery staff will be available for discussion. Free walking tours of public art throughout the city will be available from 1-3 pm, with free pedi-cab tours departing from the Gallery after 2 pm, courtesy of Monashee Adventure Tours.

"Kelowna has many beautiful pieces of public art in the Cultural District and throughout the city that residents and visitors might not be aware of, so I hope people take the opportunity to join the free guided tours offered during the open house," says Mayor Sharon Shepherd.

Please Touch the Art: Art in the Public Space is on view at the Kelowna Art Gallery now through September 4, 2011. A full slate of activities and events is planned to complement the exhibition. These include pedi-cab tours, walking tours, a panel discussion (August 11, 2011), and a scavenger hunt. For a full schedule of events with greater detail, please visit the Kelowna Art Gallery website at www.kelownaartgallery.com <http://www.kelownaartgallery.com/> .
