New Board Chair for the Royal BC Museum

VICTORIA, BC - The Royal BC Museum is pleased to welcome John Williams as the new Chair of its Board of Directors.  John Williams replaces Donald Hayes, who acted as Chair for the previous two years and now takes the role of Past Chair.

John Williams joined the Royal BC Museum Board in July 2010 with experience on boards such as Tourism BC, the Vancouver Hotel Association and the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.

“These are exciting times to be involved with the Royal BC Museum - as the organization mobilizes to achieve its strategic goals and implement its Vision for the next 100 years” stated John Williams. “The Board is impressed with the passion, professionalism and enthusiasm of the staff, and I look forward to my term as Chair.”

Williams also brings 45 years of experience in the hospitality industry. He served as vice president for Fairmont/Raffles Hotels, and has held appointments as general manager of New York’s St. Regis Hotel, Vancouver’s Pan Pacific Hotel and Victoria’s Fairmont Empress.

“We are delighted that John has accepted this new board leadership role,” said Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “I applaud the Board of Directors for the Royal BC Museum- they volunteer their time and considerable experience for the institution.”

RBCM board members are:  John Williams (chair), Donald Hayes (past chair), Peter Gustavson, Susan Knott, Graham Lee, Bud Smith, Neil Sterritt, Marg Vandenberg and Lillian White.

John Williams - Chair
John Williams was Executive Vice President of Fairmont/Raffles Hotels, responsible for the operations and transition from a domestic Canadian hotel company to the largest luxury hotel group in the world, in 30 countries, which included such iconic historic properties as the Plaza in New York, the Savoy in London, Raffles Hotel in Singapore, Le Montreux Palace, Switzerland, Le Royal Monceau, Paris, the Norfolk, Nairobi, and Victoria's own Empress Hotel. Retiring after a 45 year career in January 2009, John was honoured by Fairmont Hotels through the establishment of two annual post graduate scholarships in his name, for colleagues’ children globally. He has served on various boards, including Chair Tourism Vancouver, Chair Tourism British Columbia, Chair Vancouver Hotel Association, Chair Crofton House School Vancouver, Canada/United Kingdom Chamber of Commerce, Victoria Hospitals Foundation, International Fellow Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and Commander Sovereign Order of St John.
