Dear Media Partners,
We're doing one more push for pre-promotion for Chad Pratch: Inanimate Phenotype, which opens next weekend at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Please see the media release, below and attached. An invite for the opening reception - to be held next Friday here at the Gallery from 7-9 pm - is also attached and below. No RSVP is required, but if planning on coming please bring a copy of the invitation for admission.
The exhibition will be on view through November and is the last in our Dysfunctional Chairs series.
Thanks - some of you may hear from me next week re: leads. If nothing can run next week, please know this is a great arts story to pick up on for the next several months.
Cheers,
Kris Johnson

Discarded chairs find new life as art in Dysfunctional Chairs
Chad Pratch: Inanimate Phenotype
On view at the Kelowna Art Gallery June 18-November 27, 2011
June 10, 2011 - Kelowna, BC: Kelowna artist and UBCO BFA graduate Chad Pratch is challenging Gallery visitors to examine their preconceptions about what art is. For the past several months, the artist has been amassing discarded chairs from members of the community, to be recycled as art objects for his commission in the Kelowna Art Gallery's Dysfunctional Chairs series. Chad Pratch: Inanimate Phenotype is the final installation in the Kelowna Art Gallery's Dysfunctional Chairs series, and will be on view at the Gallery June 18-November 27, 2011.
For his installation, the artist has taken a socially-oriented route-"adopting" disregarded chairs from local individuals, and then interviewing the donors about the chairs and their relationships with them. Pratch is interested in the notion of functionality and how it is socially determined. Once a chair has had its function deemed over with, its phenotype (relevant, identifying characteristics) would appear to be completely altered. These discarded chairs will be installed on the walls and as a massive sculpture in the Rotary Courtyard space for the duration of his exhibition.
An opening reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held Friday, June 17, 2011, from 7-9 pm at the Kelowna Art Gallery. An artist's talk and tour of the exhibition (with artist Chad Pratch) will commence at 7 pm, with the reception to follow at 7:30 pm. Both the reception and the artist's talk are free events.
The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street, in the heart of the Cultural District in Downtown Kelowna.
