PRESS RELEASE
THE BULKLEY VALLEY MUSEUM
PRESENTS
SKIING AROUND HUDSON BAY MOUNTAIN, 1950 - 1980
The BV Museum announces the launch of the second part (1950-1980) of its 3
part exhibition series "Skiing Around Hudson Bay Mountain, 1930-1950,
1950-1980, 1980 to Present". The exhibition highlighting 1950-1980 will be
on exhibit from Feb 9th right through to May 13th, 2011 at the BV Museum
building in Smithers.
1950-1980 covers the period of organization and transition of skiing on the
Bulkley Valley area hills from a "seat of the pants" family fun adventure to
corporate "pay as you go", organized, day trips.
The exhibition also covers former sites which were icons of free winter fun
in the Bulkley Valley in the region's recent history such as the Smithers'
outdoor skating rink where Joe Watson, two-time Stanley Cup winner with the
Philadelphia Flyers, first learned how to skate, and cross-country ski trail
cookouts.
The exhibition also highlights skiing in the Kemano/Kitimat area thanks to
contributions by renowned local author, Einar Blix.
This exhibition launch is also the inauguration of the Bulkley Valley
Museum's Smithers Winter Culture Crawl. Two other Museum exhibitions are on
display on Main St., Smithers. Last year's "Skiing Around Hudson Bay
Mountain 1930-1950" is currently on display in the men's clothing store
Hetherington & Hooper. And the Swiss exhibition "Our Little Switzerland, the
Swiss Migration to Bulkley Valley 1934-1975", is on display at Schimmel's
Fine Pastry on Main St., Smithers.
The BV Museum's Smithers Winter Culture Crawl aims to repeat the success of
its Summer Culture Crawl. The Winter Culture Crawl is part of the BV
Museum's marketing strategy to develop Smithers as a cultural destination
point for downhill skiing, ice fishing, fine cuisine, cross country skiing,
museum and art gallery hopping, live music venues and all round family fun.
The Bulkley Valley Museum is on the move in Smithers. Come to Smithers for
skiing and culture. It's everybody's choice for good, clean fun.
Museum Hours: 9-5 pm, Monday - Friday. Admission by donation.
