Kelowna's Very Own Heritage Recognised -
Laurel Packinghouse receives Heritage Award
Kelowna (March 3, 2011) - This has been a big year for Kelowna's historic Laurel Packinghouse! The Central Okanagan Heritage Society awarded the newly renovated Laurel Packinghouse with the Heritage Preservation Award for "Conservation Project on a Building Currently in Non-Residential Use".
Kelowna Mayor Sharon Shepherd and Patti Kilback, Associate Director of Exhibitions and Public Programming of the Kelowna Museums Society, stood up to receive the award on behalf of the Laurel during the 2010 Heritage Week celebrations. The awards ceremony was held at the Benvoulin Heritage Church on February 24th, 2011, and the award was presented by the President of the Okanagan Heritage Society, Don Knox. "The Kelowna Museums Society is very proud to accept this award along with the City of Kelowna" said Kilback. "We are so happy to be back in the Laurel, and look forward to sharing this wonderful building with our community!"
The Laurel Packinghouse is a nationally designated landmark, and is the oldest and largest standing packinghouse in British Columbia. The renovation project commenced over two years ago, and was finally completed in November, 2010. The Laurel Packinghouse is the home to the BC Orchard Industry Museum and the BC Wine Museum and VQA Wine Shop. It is also a venue for hundreds of weddings, corporate and private events, and for events such as the annual Cherry and Apple Fairs, tradeshows, craft shows, and the Okanagan History Fair (April 30th, 2011).
Heritage Week is a province wide celebration of BC's rich and wonderful heritage. This year's theme was Parks and Cultural Landscapes: Celebrating 100 Years of Parks in Canada. Kelowna celebrated all week long with various events throughout the city, showcasing our landscapes and parks.
Also honoured at this ceremony were Lorainne McLarty (Distinguished Community Service), The HD Riggs House, 911 Borden Avenue - Davara Enterprises (Conservation on a Building currently in Residential Use), Raymer House, 730 Lawson Avenue - Jesai Chantler (Continued Conservation of a Heritage Building), and to the Myra Canyon Trestle Restoration Society for "Conservation of a Neighbourhood or Area".
