Job Title: Summer Interpreter (Young Canada Works)
Location: Britannia Mine Museum, Britannia Beach, BC

Date: end August/start Sep 2011
Duration of Position: 4 months
Hours: 35 per week, 5 days per week, weekend work and some Stat days
required
Wage: $12.50 per hour

About the Museum
The Britannia Mine Museum is governed by the Britannia Beach Historical
Society. This Society is a non-profit organization, established to preserve
the material and social history of mining in British Columbia, and to
educate the public about mining and the history of Britannia Beach. It is a
registered charity. The organization is financially self-sustaining; it
receives no government funding and relies on revenues, grants and donations
for its operating costs.
We currently see around 30,000 visitors a year. Our visitors come from both
local and tourism sectors, and we attract all ages. We offer public (i.e.
not pre-booked) and booked tours; tour timings vary depending on seasonal
changes. In 2010, we hosted around 10,000 school students. The Education
Services department also operates tours to the EPCOR Britannia Mine Water
Treatment Plant Discovery Centre. The Visitor Services department also
operates the Company Store.
Duties and responsibilities of this position
As a Summer Interpreter you will be responsible for:
* Delivery of school and group tours to the Britannia Mine Museum
(including tunnel tour, Mill building, gold panning). Note: Training may
also be given to deliver tours to the EPCOR Britannia Mine Water Treatment
Plant Discovery Centre; this would be discussed with successful applicant on
hire
* Participating in the achievement (identification, planning,
development, implementation and evaluation) of Outreach Programs at the BC
Museum of Mining as directed by supervisor, including public tours,
programmes and events
* Committing to learn and understand the Britannia story as well as
geology and the environmental issues & successes so that excellent tours can
be provided to the public and students
* Completing site inspection, ensuring excellent standards and good
first impressions are met
Qualifications Required and/or Preferred:
The Britannia Mine Museum of is looking for an energetic, out-going student
who enjoys working with people. As a Summer Interpreter you play a key role
in helping to ensure our 30,000 annual visitors have an informative and
memorable visit to the Museum. The Museum is designated a National Historic
Site and a BC Historic Landmark. We strive to offer an enjoyable experience
that furthers understanding about mining in BC and tells the story of a
community with a fascinating history.
The Ideal Candidate:
. You enjoy interacting with people of all ages, in particular
children
. You have excellent communication skills - can adjust your
presentation to suit the understanding of the group (e.g. school children,
international visitors)
. You're a team player, dependable and know the importance of time
management
. You have the ability to do some physical work and to work outside
in the elements
. You have an interest in history, geology, education, mining or
environmental issues

Note: Position dependent upon funding.
Applicants need to be full time students resuming full time studies in
September 2011, between the ages of 18-30 at time of hire.
