Summer Collections Technician and Programming Assistant
Steveston Museum, Richmond, BC
Duration: 12 weeks
Hours: 30 hours per week
Wage: $13/hour plus 12% mandatory benefits
Start Date: Tuesday May 24, 2011
End Date: Monday, August 15, 2011

Steveston Museum seeks a creative, energetic, positive and organized
individual to work as a Collections Technician and Programming
Assistant. Under the supervision of the Museum Coordinator, the
successful applicant will be responsible for re-organizing the Museum's
collection and database and assisting with summer public programs.
Duties include:
1. Using Microsoft Access database to cross-reference the physical
location of artefacts, update the database, locate misplaced artefacts
and re-organize artefact storage in line with conservation guidelines
2. Assisting with summer programming at the Museum. This will include
promotional duties including creating an on-line presence using social
networking sites, liaising with community groups, supervising volunteers
and setting up and taking down of tents and tables etc.
3. Assisting with all facets of exhibit design of small, temporary
exhibits in the Museum
4. Assisting with the care and conservation of artefacts on exhibit
5. Other museum activities as required
Qualifications:
1. Working towards an undergraduate degree in history, archaeology,
anthropology, museum studies or event management (3rd or 4th year
students preferred)
2. Previous work or volunteer experience with museum collections would
be an asset
3. Experience in the care and handling of museum artefacts
4. Basic preventative conservation skills
5. Intermediate experience with Microsoft Access
6. Superior organizational skills
7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
8. Able to climb stairs, stepladders and to lift boxes up to 12 kg
As per the Young Canada Works guidelines, the Applicant must be a
Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have been granted refugee status
in Canada; are legally entitled to work in Canada; are between the ages
of 16 and 30 years of age at the start of your employment and are a
full-time post-secondary student who intends to return to school. The
applicant also must be registered in the YCW candidate inventory;
willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment and must
not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed
with YCW.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Exceptions to these
times include: Canada Day (July 1) and Saturday July 9, 23 and August 6.
