EDUCATION PROGRAMMER
(Program Assistant)
Scope of Duties
The North Vancouver Museum and Archives is accepting applications for the position of Education Programmer. Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Education Programmer will join the staff at a turning point in the NVMA's development - a time when a new museum facility is being planned and programs are being evaluated and renewed. The Education Programmer will undertake a variety of program-based duties aimed at the creation, delivery and promotion of programs for schools, docents and the general public.
The Education Programmer will plan, schedule, implement, and evaluate a wide range of programs including special events, lectures, heritage displays and demonstrations, costumed theatrical interpretation and curricula-based school programs. The Programmer will renew the docent program by increasing participants, overseeing their scheduling, training and work. S/he will supervise volunteer and casual staff, maintain statistical records, and assist with the development and distribution of promotional materials. The Programmer also will be responsible for special projects including managing the Education Collection of artifacts and touchable materials. The incumbent will work effectively with students, teachers, representatives of community groups, as well as alongside program volunteers and Museum and Archives staff members.
The North Vancouver Museum and Archives operates from two heritage buildings including the Museum in Presentation House Arts Centre and the Community History Centre in Lynn Valley. Programs also are delivered at community events and in local schools. The Programmer is responsible for maintaining and assisting with the development of excellent programs and promotional activities, and for ensuring all programs provide a high quality of visitor service and public interaction.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and/or coursework in a relevant discipline, with additional coursework in theatre or public history, are desirable. Previous experience in a museum or historic site setting and a demonstrated interest in local history and material culture are required. Excellent interpersonal skills, academic record, written and oral communication skills, experience working with and supervising volunteers and staff, and a desire to help others pursue their cultural interests are required. The successful candidate will be familiar with cultural interpretation, program delivery and teaching methods; and have a demonstrated ability to track details and meet deadlines. Strong computer skills and valid B.C. Drivers License, with a safe driving history, are required. Canadian residents only need apply. Completion of a criminal record check will be required.
Hours and Salary
This is a permanent full-time position of 35 hours per week. Regular work week is Tuesday to Saturday; summer work week is Wednesday to Sunday. This position is compensated at Pay Grade M17-1 at an hourly rate of $23.04 (rising to $23.50 subject to budget approval). A full range of benefits after completion of qualifying periods is available.
