Dear BCMA members,
I am sad to report that the first director of the North Vancouver Museum & Archives, William (Bill) Baker, passed away last week. Bill oversaw what was then called the North Shore Museum & Archives for almost twenty years (1972 to 1991). From modest beginnings in the old PGE Station in Mahon Park, the Museum & Archives moved to the main floor of the Presentation House Arts Centre in 1976. Over the next 15 years, Bill amassed thousands of artifacts, photographs, and archival materials to populate the collections of the Museum and the Archives. In 1986, he helped acquire and restore the last remaining car (BC Electric Railway Car #153) from North Vancouver's street railway system (1906-47). He was especially interested in firefighting equipment and memorabilia, and was a founder of North Vancouver's Hose Reel Festival and Parade. After retiring, he moved to Summerland and volunteered with the Kettle Valley Railway.
Here is a link to Bill's obituary in the Vancouver Sun (http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/vancouversun/obituary.aspx?n=william-herbert-jarvis-baker-bill&pid=154307844&fhid=5840). There will be a memorial service next Saturday, November 5th, in North Vancouver.
Sincerely,
Nancy Kirkpatrick, Director
