NANAIMO MUSEUM
Media Release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tantalizing Fiction and Poignant Personal Essays
Join two Vancouver Island authors as they celebrate the launch of their
new books at the Nanaimo Museum on Tuesday, November 22 from 2:30 to
4:30 pm. Nanaimo's Kim Clark will read from her feisty new short stories
Attemptations and Victoria's award-winning writer Madeline Sonik will
read from her fascinating collection of personal essays, Afflictions and
Departures. Admission is free.
Attemptations is a sizzling new collection of stories from Vancouver
Island's Kim Clark. All eleven stories - ranging from micro-fiction to
near maxi-fiction - in Attemptations are peopled by women, often
physically challenged women-funny, sexy, persevering, contemplative
women. These characters will snag you and hold you there 'til they're
good and done.
Kim Clark lives on Vancouver Island. Disease and desire, mothering and
the mundane propel her ongoing journey between poetry and prose. Kim's
work can be found in Body Breakdowns (Anvil Press), the Malahat Review,
and e-zines and other publications in Canada and the U.S. She was a
2010 winner in the scratch Poetry and Fiction Contests and was
short-listed in the Malahat Review 2010 Novella Contest. Kim holds a BA
in Creative Writing from VIU.
Affliction & Departures are first-person experiential essays by writer
and academic Madeline Sonik. Although Sonik explores some of the salient
personal experiences of her young life, the essays in Afflictions &
Departures are not traditional memoir. In addition to incidents and
feelings recaptured from memory, Sonik seeks out connections between the
microcosm of the daily events of her childhood and the social,
historical and scientific trends of the time.
Madeline Sonik is a teacher, writer, and editor. Her work has been
published extensively in journals, magazines, and academic anthologies.
Her latest books include: Stone Sightings (poetry), Arms (a novel),
Drying the Bones (stories), and Belinda and the Dustbunnys (children's
novel). She has an MFA in Creative Writing and a PhD in Education, both
from UBC. She is currently nominated for the BC National Award for
Canadian Non-Fiction and has also been the recipient of numerous awards,
prizes, and fellowships for her writing. She currently teaches at the
University of Victoria.
