northwest coast artists ‘think outside the box’ for charity

Vancouver, bc – NOVEMBER 21, 2011: Boxed lunch, a Man-E-Faces cartoon
character, Rainbows, a Frog, and a Make Shift Shelter. of these elaborate
creations first began as an identical box and came to life as something
else. Every year for the past five years, selected Northwest Coast Native
artists have donated their time, materials and creative efforts for Lattimer
Gallery’s Annual Charity Bentwood Box silent auction. In the process of
raising donations for charity, these artists are given the opportunity to
create outstanding pieces by thinking ‘outside the box’. All of the boxes
will be steam-bent and donated by Métis/Cree artist James Michels.

Last year, Lattimer Gallery and its participating artists raised $10,850 for
the Aboriginal Health Program at BC Women’s Hospital. This year, 100% of
proceeds from each piece will be donated to Urban Native Youth Association,
a Vancouver organization which has been providing 21 prevention-focused
programs and services to Native Youth since 1988 to help meet their
immediate and longer-term needs. UNYA’s work includes advocacy, community
development, and providing youth with meaningful opportunities to provide
input into their programs and services.

Between November 19th and December 3rd, you will have the chance to bid on
these extraordinary pieces in $50.00 increments via phone, email or in
person. The boxes can be viewed on our website with their current
accompanying bids beginning November 15th. Participating artists include
Robert Davidson (Haida), Clint Work (Kwakwaka’wakw), Phil Gray
(Tsimshian/Cree), Gwaai Edenshaw (Haida), Ernest Swanson (Haida), Steve
Smith (Kwakwaka’wakw), Bradley Hunt (Heiltsuk), Dean Hunt (Heiltsuk), and
Shawn Hunt (Heiltsuk) among others.

We invite you to take part in this exciting charity event this holiday
season. Please join us for a reception culminating the final evening of
bidding, December 3rd, from 5pm to 8pm. The boxes will be on display and
participating artists for our annual charity event will be in attendance.
