To the BCMA membership:
Could you spare a moment?
I was laid off from my job as a curator last year and decided to take my career in a new direction. With 20+ years of museum collection and exhibit experience, I went back to college and took joinery/cabinetmaking with a mind to combine old skills with new. I am exploring the possibility of building conservation-friendly exhibit cases and mounts, especially for smaller museums which may not have professional production staff.
I am applying for Community Futures funding to start my business. Part of that application is market analysis to see if a business is feasible.
Could you reply to this message and let me know if you think your museum would be interested in such a service.
Even if you only have time to answer 'yes' or 'no', that is useful to me.
If you have a little more time, please answer:
Would you hire someone to build mounts, exhibit cases or storage systems for your museum?
Would you hire someone to design mounts, exhibit cases or storage systems and have volunteers build them?
How often do you change exhibits and require different cases/mounts?
Are you pleased with your current exhibit cases?
Would you require grant funding to finance new cases?
What would you expect a new exhibit case (6' wide by 7' tall and 2' deep) to cost?
Your help is valuable and very appreciated! Please respond by October 24. Thank you.
