Now Open - 'A Green Dress: Objects, Memory and the Museum'

The O'Brian Gallery, MOA, Sept 27, 2011-Apr 8, 2012

A tiny, single, embroidered shoe made to encase a woman's bound foot in China. An Iraqi temple brick from 2112-2004 BCE, honouring the third ruler of the Ur III Dynasty. A pop-culture piece by Sonny Assu that reminds us -- tongue firmly in cheek -- of just whose land we're living on. Extraordinary painted scrolls from West Bengal which, when unfurled, provided social commentary on events of the day. And the green dress of the title: the dress that played a vital role in the 2009 reconciliation ceremony between the family of John Williams, slain in 1839 on the shores of Erromango, Vanuatu, and members of the clan responsible for his murder 170 years ago.

What kinds of memories did these and other objects in MOA's worldwide collections hold in their original settings, and how have they transformed, disappeared, or become part of new memories? How do museums contain memory, and how do they create it? And what do we preserve when we record voices, images, and actions from the past on slides, tapes, and other technologies that themselves become obsolete?

We invite you to consider these and other questions while viewing, listening to, and experiencing this exhibit. We also invite you to make your own mark on interactive Buddha Boards set up in the gallery: simply 'paint' on the board using a brush dipped in water, and then watch your words disappear as the brush strokes dry... words as mutable as memory itself.

'A Green Dress: Objects, Memory and the Museum' was co-curated by Karen Duffek, Krisztina Laszlo, Carol E. Mayer, and Susan Rowley. It was designed by Skooker Broome, with graphics by Marcela Huerta. Special thanks to Roy Arden, Lisa Cooper, Veronica Fynn, Stephen Inglis, Monte Clark Gallery, Vickie Jensen, Musqueam Indian Band, Anna Naupa, Marianne Nicolson, Jude Norris, Jamasie Pitseolak, and Jay Powell.
