The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria, British Columbia is pleased to offer the following online learning opportunity for professionals and volunteers working in museums and heritage sites.

Heritage Resource Management (HA 487A)

September 10 - December 16, 2012; Distance offering
Instructor: Chris Wiebe

This survey course explores the nature and value of heritage resources worldwide along with the management approaches that support their preservation and presentation. The mix of print and online materials strengthen your understanding of:

 •the foundation principles of heritage conservation
 •the importance of accommodating diverse perspectives and values in heritage conservation planning and management
 •the ways in which heritage conservation activity is integrated with broader economic, social, and community dynamics
 •the philosophical, historical and intellectual basis of the policies, approaches and procedures encountered in the conservation process
 •the diverse tasks, skills and types of expertise that are called upon in conservation practice
 •heritage conservation literature, sources and reference materials
 •the structure and functions of the heritage conservation community
 •the range of management approaches that respond to the needs of both the heritage resource and the community

To participate in HA 487A, you are expected to access a range of heritage resources in your community in order to undertake assignments that relate to local heritage issues, opportunities and challenges.

Fee: CAD$618.00 plus coursepack (prices determined by the UVic Bookstore).

Registration deadline: August 13; late registrations accepted if space permits.

About the Instructor:

Chris Wiebe is Manager, Heritage Policy and Government Relations for the HeritageCanada Foundation.  He joined the Heritage Canada Foundation in 2006. He organizes HCF’s annual national conference, advocates for federal heritage incentives and legislation, and researches the connection between heritage conservation and sustainability. Chris sits on the Board of Directors at the Willowbank School for Restoration Arts in Queenston, Ontario. He holds Master of Arts degrees from Carleton University (Canadian Studies - Heritage Conservation) and the University of Alberta (English) and has written widely on heritage conservation and cultural issues for such magazines as Canadian Geographic and Alberta Views.

The Cultural Resource Management Program offers distance education courses for professionals, volunteers and board members in museums, galleries, heritage sites, cultural centres and related organizations. Courses are designed to address the emerging needs of the sector and build your personal and organizational capacity.

In our courses, you interact with colleagues from across North America and beyond, participate in stimulating learning activities, and relate your learning to the practical issues and realities of your workplace and community. Courses are taught by instructors who are leading professionals in the field.

Courses can be taken individually or towards a comprehensive diploma or focused professional specialization certificate. Individual credit and non-credit course registration options are also available. Choose the program and / or course best suited to meet your needs from the flexible options available.
