SENSE OF SCALE: IDEAS FOR A WORLD IMAGINED

Artist Gary Cherneff presents "Sense + Scale: Ideas for a World Imagined,"
an

exhibition of three- and two-dimensional works at the Craft Council of BC
Gallery at

1386 Cartwright Street, Granville Island from August 30 to October 11, 2012.
An

opening reception will be held on Thursday, August 30 from 6pm to 8pm.

 

Cherneff, a studio potter for over 37 years, has spent increasingly more
time exploring the possibilities of other artistic media- painting, photo
collage, and sculpture among them. For this exhibition, he parts with
production handcraft to present a range of three- and two-dimensional works
that operate outside the bounds of functionality. The selection of 'process
artifacts'-three-dimensional drawings of a kind-span from mixed media
sculptures to white porcelain forms. These, in concert with his related two
dimensional works, show an artist striking his own path across several
territories in visual culture. Above all, Cherneff is preoccupied with the
question of scale: moving from one medium to the next, he is driven by the
prospect of sculpting new, larger contexts for his art. Curated by Steve
