CURATOR

 

 

General Accountability

The Curator reports to the Associate Director.

 

Responsible for:  developing the museum collection; researching,
documenting, and caring for the artifacts within the collection;
coordinating and controlling the movement of artifacts; maintaining the
museum exhibition areas, planning, developing, and installing museum and
outreach exhibits;  and providing information regarding the museum
collection to the DMAS staff and to the general public.

 

Specific Accountabilities

 

Collections:

Responsible for developing and maintaining the Museum's collection of
artifacts, within the context of the Museum's collection policy and in
consultation with the Collections Committee, including:

o   coordinating collection acquisitions,

o   developing an awareness and understanding of the community served, in
order to develop a collection that is significant for the present and well
into the future,

o   identifying objects in the collection and undertaking research to
develop catalogue information,

o   developing contacts in the community to encourage donations, 

o   recommending accessions and de-accessions to the Associate Director,

o   in conjunction with the committee chair, leads the Collections
Committee.

 

Responsible for registration and record-keeping for the collection,
including:

o   creating, maintaining, and updating collection records, files, and
inventories in paper and electronic formats,

o   numbering and labeling artifacts, 

o   cataloguing artifacts, entering and retrieving data, and developing
finding aids.

 

Responsible for care of the collection, including:

o   monitoring environmental standards,

o   overseeing artifact safety, security, and condition while in storage and
on exhibition through preventive conservation,

o   assessing artifact condition and conserving as necessary, 

o   making recommendations to the Associate Director regarding collection
care and upgrading storage and exhibition facilities, in order to
accommodate the growth of the collection and its preservation.

 

Responsible for coordinating and controlling the movement of artifacts for
incoming and outgoing loans, donations, and exhibitions, including:

o   arranging for shipping customs declarations, insurance coverage, and
other related matters, 

o   preparing a conditional report for packing and shipping artifacts, and
processing related documents.

 

 

Exhibitions:

Responsible for planning, developing, and organizing exhibitions, including:

o   developing and coordinating permanent and temporary exhibit schedules as
a participant in the annual planning process,

o   researching specific topics to produce exhibit storylines and writing
label copy, 

o   selecting artifacts and other materials from the collection or arranging
for borrowed items,

o   leads the Exhibit Working Group.

Responsible for the proper display of artifacts in museum and outreach
exhibitions, including:

o   preparing artifacts and proper mounts for exhibitions,

o   installing and taking down exhibitions, 

o   maintaining exhibition cleanliness, lighting, display cases, and related
display hardware.

 

Administrative duties include:

o   providing input into the museum and exhibitions budgets,

o   overseeing departmental expenditures within an approved budget, 

o   participating in the identification and preparation of grants as
requested, 

o   preparing relevant curatorial reports,

o   occasionally, may be required to supervise temporary staff, hired to
perform routine tasks in the museum. The Curator may be required to train
and supervise a small number of volunteers or work experience students who
assist in the museum.

 

Performs other related duties.

 

Qualifications: Education, Training, Experience, and Abilities

-          University degree in a discipline appropriate to museum work,
such as history, archeology, ethnology, fine arts, or museum studies.
Graduate studies preferred.  

 

-          Minimum of 2 years experience as a curator of a small to medium
size museum. 

 

-          Knowledge and experience in the planning, design, development,
fabrication and installation of museum exhibits.

 

-          Considerable knowledge of and experience in the acquisition,
identification, cataloguing, display, storage, and conservation of museum
objects. 

 

-          Demonstrated knowledge of collections management software (namely
Inmagic), database maintenance, digital photography and management of
digital images, and word processing software.

 

-          Demonstrated research and writing skills.

 

-          Ability to work within the team environment of a community-based
museums and archives, and within the context of Delta Museum and Archives
Society's policies and procedures.

 

-          Adequate level of physical agility and strength required to
fabricate, install and dismount exhibits.

 

-          Excellent organizational skills; ability to meet deadlines;
ability to work on many projects at one time.

 

-          Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently
and in a team.

 

-          Firearms Certificate (Possession and Acquisition License) will be
a requirement.

 

-          Valid B.C. Driver's License required; use of a personal vehicle
will be a requirement. 

 

-          Criminal Record Search Clearance will be required. 

 

Hours: 35 hours per week: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Tuesday to Saturday

Pay Rate: $27.62 per hour, plus benefits and RRSP contribution (in
accordance with CUPE 454 Collective Agreement)
