Energy in BC, under the (Low-E) spotlight for Heritage Week
Victoria - In 1897 the Lubbe Powerhouse became the first hydroelectric plant on Vancouver Island, and one of the first of its type in coastal North America. These plants were the beginning of British Columbia's clean energy movement. They used a sustainable resource, well before it was ever described that way.
The Royal BC Museum has in its collection the governor from an electric generator installed at the Lubbe Powerhouse at Goldstream, near Victoria, in September, 1898. Today, the red brick powerhouse and dome-roofed generating station are draped with moss and ferns, are on watershed land and are strictly off limits.
What is open to visitors during Heritage Week, from Feb. 20-26, are two minor installations on the Royal BC Museum's ground floor, just off the lobby. Both support the theme of this year's Heritage Week - Energy in BC: A Powerful Past, A Sustainable Future.
The 10 winning images from the Team Power Smart Photo Contest are on display until March 11. "This is what I do to be smart with my power" was this year's contest theme. The judging panel included Team Power Smart Leader, NBA superstar Steve Nash, and representatives from the Royal BC Museum, London Drugs, and BC Hydro. The public also helped by selecting a favourite from the short-list of 10 finalists.
Power used to run the Royal BC Museum and cultural precinct, in the very present sense, is displayed nearby on the Pulse Energy Dashboard. Pulse software tracks energy being consumed at any given moment, analyzes it, and displays it in real-time in a series of charts and graphs on a monitor. Visitors see the direct impact of the museum's energy saving plan, and how multiple small changes in behaviour can make a big difference.
The poster for 2012 Heritage Week features a painting by local Victoria artist Robert Amos of Stave Falls Powerhouse, now part of the Stave Falls Visitor Centre in the Fraser Valley. The poster can be found at www.heritagebc.ca<http://www.heritagebc.ca>
