about the art installation ****

Presented at the Lobby Gallery at the Liu Institute for Global Issues
(Installation up from February 22nd- March 12th)****

In Guatemala, where women feel that the street is not a safe space, local
women's organizations campaigning to eradicate violence against women
metaphorically claim the air as their safe space. Using images of
butterflies and witches, they represent themselves, their struggle, and
their hopes for a better future. How do butterflies and witches manifest
women's struggles, empowerment and demands in this context? Why are these
specific symbols claimed, circulated, and embodied? ****
